Julia Tuttle Causeway

The Julia Tuttle Causeway is a small island located in the intercoastal waterway between the mainland of Florida and the outer island. The island exists only to support the road that bridges the mainland to the outer island. A sex offender colony existed under this bridge between 2006 and 2010 due to Miami-Dade ordinances that prevented registered sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet of schools, parks, bus stops, or homeless shelters. Miami-Dade sex offenders released from prison during this time were required to report to the encampment under the bridge and the addresses on their state identification cards reflected this. The Julia Tuttle Causeway, as an artwork, is an installation of various dimensions. Actual images of the encampment are combined with google earth images to re-create the encampment in a miniature diorama. The view of the island from the encampment is represented by a painting. On site, at the Julia Tuttle Causeway, a real-life size version of the diorama can be seen via the mobile app Layar.
